The future of the 271 Bus stand Pond Square/South Grove
We are delighted to confirm that Camden Council have rejected TFL's proposal to create a bus stand outside Cafe Rouge and we thank all of you who took the time to sign our petition which has over 1200 signatures! Unfortunately TfL have rejected the Highgate Society's proposals to move the 271 bus stand from the centre of village and extend the service to join up to East Finchley, however we will not be deterred! We are galvanising support from the local schools, most of whom are strongly in favour of extending the 271 route as there are insufficient buses for the school children. We also have Darren Johnson (Lead Transport Member for the GLA) onboard. We will continue working on our proposal with a view to presenting it to Camden Council and TfL later this year. -
2012 Olympics funding for Highgate
As many of you may be aware, Highgate will be part of the Olympic cycle route which will run up West Hill, past the Gatehouse, then down Hampstead Lane and should attract significant numbers of spectators (as demonstrated by the Tour of Britain event earlier this year). We were delighted to learn that there may be funding available for environmental improvements along the cycle route and see this as an opportunity to improve the streetscape (e.g. signage, pavements, buildings, walls etc) along these roads. We have just started discussions with Camden Council and would welcome any suggestions (by e-mail) that we can include in our application. -
Archway Road Regeneration Scheme
There is an active Neighbourhood management group, supported by Haringey Council, who are working to upgrade and improve the Archway Road. At the most recent meeting the following initiatives were agreed:
- A public meeting to present the results of a major survey amongst Archway residents and business
- Strengthening shop windows so that ugly metal shutters can be removed
- A music festival planned March 23 to 25 using local venues along Archway Road
- Clean up the graffiti

What's new on Highgate High Street?
Highgate High Street looked wonderful over Christmas with the Christmas lights switched on by the former English and British Lions scrum half, Kyran Brachen, and our new Christmas tree in the church graveyard overlooking the roundabout at the top of the High Street (kindly donated by Michael Still at Highgate Grocers). The retailers we spoke to had a busy Christmas period and the gift and clothing shops are just coming to the end of their sales. We would like to give a warm welcome to the new BBC3 Barbershop, which recently opened in the Parkheath estate agent unit, and wish them every success. Unfortunately we still have 2 empty units on the High Street (the former Gardens Beyond shop and Antony Payne) which is a concern, although we can confirm that Starbucks will not be leasing the Antony Payne unit. If you are interested in the future of our High Street then come along to our next public debate later this year. -
Highgate receives funding from Haringey's "Making a Difference" Awards
We are delighted announce that the Highgate Society's application for this award was successful and work on the following improvements will begin at the end of February.
- Restoration of a Victorian gas lamp on North Road by the main entrance of Highgate School
- Restoration of the Victorian cast iron finger post at the lower end of Tile Kiln Lane
- Restoration of a Victorian cast iron finger post at the junction of Woodside Avenue and Fordington Road (a reminder of a long lost footpath which ran across the fields to Finchley)
Please e-mail your suggestions for similar restoration projects that we can recommend for next year.
