Camden Conservation Area Appraisal

London Borough of Haringey Statutorily Listed Buildings

Protected (Listed) buildings etc. within the Camden part of the Highgate Conservation Area

Register of Haringey local listed buildings of merit in the Highgate Conservation Area

Furnival House, Cholmeley Park N6 5EW

There are as many tales as there are those with tales to tell on recent planning approvals to extend Furnival House upwards and into the ground downwards and change its use. The floor area is to be increased by 67% to provide 15 flats in place the of 113 affordable student hostel places. Battles have been won, but the campaign has been lost, a sad and in my partisan view bad outcome against many planning objections each voiced by one or more of the many objectors.

Highgate Bus Discussions maske some progress

On May 8th, after many years of delays and frustration, the Highgate
Society for the first time managed to sit round a table with planners from Tranport for London to engage in a serious discussion of how their bus network might be revised to take into account the current needs of the village and its surrounding neighbourhoods. A key objective of our campaign is to remove the 271 turnaround from South Grove.

The two hour session, which was co-ordinated by Simon Briscoe, was attended by five members of the society and two officials from TfL. During the meeting TfL acknowledged that the Society had done its homework and had assembled a team which was able to put forward credible suggestions in a professional manner. Gradually the meeting took a much more positive form with both parties building on each other's arguments rather than trying to knock them down.

At the conclusion, it was agreed that TfL would consider our and other suggestions and come back to us with a list of which ones they think deserve more detailed consideration by their network specialists. We will report these back to our members and, based on their comments, return for a second meeting where we would participate in a more detailed evaluation of the remaining options.

2012 Olympics funding for Highgate

As many of you may be aware, Highgate will be part of the Olympic cycle route which will run up West Hill, past the Gatehouse, then down Hampstead Lane and should attract significant numbers of spectators (as demonstrated by the Tour of Britain event earlier this year).  We were delighted to learn that there may be funding available for environmental improvements along the cycle route and see this as an opportunity to improve the streetscape (e.g. signage, pavements, buildings, walls etc) along these roads.  We have just started discussions with Camden Council and would welcome any suggestions (by e-mail) that we can include in our application.
