What's new on Highgate High Street?
Highgate High Street looked wonderful over Christmas with the Christmas lights switched on by the former English and British Lions scrum half, Kyran Brachen, and our new Christmas tree in the church graveyard overlooking the roundabout at the top of the High Street (kindly donated by Michael Still at Highgate Grocers). The retailers we spoke to had a busy Christmas period and the gift and clothing shops are just coming to the end of their sales.
We would like to give a warm welcome to the new BBC3 Barbershop, which recently opened in the Parkheath estate agent unit, and wish them every success. Unfortunately we still have 2 empty units on the High Street (the former Gardens Beyond shop and Antony Payne) which is a concern, although we can confirm that Starbucks will not be leasing the Antony Payne unit. If you are interested in the future of our High Street then come along to our next public debate later this year.
Highgate receives funding from Haringey's "Making a Difference" Awards
We are delighted announce that the Highgate Society's application for this award was successful and work on the following improvements will begin at the end of February.
-
Restoration of a Victorian gas lamp on North Road by the main entrance of Highgate School
-
Restoration of the Victorian cast iron finger post at the lower end of Tile Kiln Lane
-
Restoration of a Victorian cast iron finger post at the junction of Woodside Avenue and Fordington Road (a reminder of a long lost footpath which ran across the fields to Finchley)
Please e-mail your suggestions for similar restoration projects that we can recommend for next year here.
