Aims of the society - we need your support!

The Highgate Society is a voluntary organization of over 1,000 members living in and around Highgate, London N6. Our primary aim is to make Highgate a better place in which to live and work. To achieve this we mount a wide variety of activities for members, (while being wide open to ideas for further new activities) as you can see from the panel on the left of screen. Prominent among these, under the heading of ‘Environment', is our dedication to principles of sound planning, for the protection and enhancement of the public amenities that we all enjoy.

Much of our work requires close consultation with local authorities. Perhaps the biggest problem we face is the regrettable and insensitive division of our community – because Highgate is a community - between a number of London boroughs: the boundary between Haringey and Camden runs, if you please, slap up the middle of Highgate High Street; these boroughs' southern boundary with Islington runs along Hornsey Lane, across Highgate Hill at St Joseph's church, and down the middle of Dartmouth Park Hill; everything east of Highgate golf course lies in Barnet.

To deal with these various authorities, and to make sense, for Highgate, of their often conflicting objectives and prejudices, we need skilled help – which is not lacking among our members. But we also need all the support we can get from a sizeable membership, which has to be large enough to speak credibly for Highgate as a whole. Accordingly, we extend the warmest of welcomes not only to those who will work to help us achieve our aims; not only to those who want to pursue leisure activities within the Society's ambit; but also to everyone who is prepared just to give their voice (and a very modest membership fee) in our support.

Membership

It has been a great year for the team and it all started when 12 volunteers beat the record for stuffing envelopes with the annual subscription reminder last April. The techniques are getting smooth: we now have self-adhesive stamps and self seal envelopes that are A5 size so we only have to fold once. These are some of the many skills you would pick up as a volunteer with the membership team..

The” back office team” ensure the smooth running of this year round task of sending out annual subscriptions, sorting and filing and updating data, banking and coding (yes we would like more direct debits), printing labels, welcoming new members with letters and parties. We will have held 3 parties this year and they are a great place to find new volunteers!

The “get new members group“ has been busy and successful this year in trying out new ways of attracting Highgate residents and businesses to sign up and be counted.

We never have enough helpers and if you would like to join us to make some phone calls, fold a letter or two, help at a party, sell at a stall then do please ring Jan on 0208 340 9490 or Christina on 0208 348 1003 or write to Freda at 10A South Grove. We would so welcome you.

Please visit our membership page to find out how to join the HIghgate Society.

How can you help the Environment group?

There is a slot here for any one of you and a whole range of tasks to do from a letter or email to write, a development site to see, trees to count, local borough councillors to hear , web site to explore, phone call to chase and all for an hour or more a week. Cheap and satisfying entertainment on your doorstep and we do need you.

Join up now and help one of the sub teams.

Planning does just that - it reviews the planning applications in the area against the UDP and works with the local council planning teams.

Open spaces visit and talk and listen and liaise with the many open spaces we enjoy: Hampstead Heath, Waterlow Park, Pond Square, Queens Wood, Highgate Wood.

Keep Highgate Tidy has a watching brief with the local Councils and have achieved so much from both. You can’t miss the hard working volunteers here as they work in their smart jackets as well as talk.

Traffic and Transport keeps us moving whether on foot, cycle, car, bus, tube or train and they have had a non stop busy time with CPZ’s and bus route changes.

Any one of these four groups would welcome some help however small or big so please do go along to a meeting or call or email. It is much more fun to be a part of the Highgate Society and doing a small bit than an onlooker. Thank you.

Its all here.
