WELCOME TO THE HIGHGATE SOCIETY

We aim to make Highgate and its neighbourhood a better place in which to live and work;
to ensure that any changes made in the environment enhance the amenity of the area:
to encourage sound planning and to improve public transport.

For many years the Highgate Society has been among those fighting to correct the grave injustice whereby a developer refused planning permission can appeal against the refusal, without any cost; but if a permission is given against planning policies – which happens too often – and a third party, such as a neighbour, is badly affected as a result, their only recourse is the expense of taking it through the Courts by a Judicial Review.

In addition, financially-strapped local authorities are all too often pressured into giving bad planning permissions, for fear of being taken to appeal by a well-resourced developer and incurring substantial legal costs – a misuse of the planning system which simply encourages developers to use the appeal system as a “second throw of the dice.”

As we reported in Buzz only last month, the Government continues to deny the need for a Third Party Right of Appeal, citing thoroughly disingenuous grounds.
At last, Civic Voice has launched a nationwide petition to “give communities back the right to decide where houses are built”, calling for a Parliamentary debate on the Government's Housing and Planning policy for building on greenfield land, seeking a community right of appeal on planning decisions, and urging the removal of the presumption in favour of sustainable development – a meaningless phrase which merely weakens the ability to reject bad developments.

The petition needs 10,000 signatures to receive a government response; it currently has over 16,000, but the Government’s response is predictable. However, if it receives 100,000 signatures, it will be considered for debate in Parliament.

It can be accessed on: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/177333

If successful, this could be the single most important achievement in the Town Planning field in recent decades for communities everywhere. PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION, AND URGE EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO SIGN IT.

The Society was started 50 years ago and we aim to keep Highgate a wonderful place to live and work. With three boroughs adjoining us, everyone’s opinion counts and we’d love to have yours. The more members we have, the stronger we are together to lobby for Highgate and keep our area special.

We have plenty of activities and groups to join, but if you are pressed for time you can be just a member, read Buzz and perhaps enjoy our Summer Festival Fair in the Square or Carols in December.

An individual membership costs just £15 a year, or £21 for a whole family. Our premises at 10a South Grove are available to hire for your parties, meetings and events. Coffee and biscuits are served every Saturday morning between 10.30 and 12.30 and all are welcome.

Buzz is The Society’s magazine and is produced four times during the year and you could have a copy of your own by joining.
