Save the Whittington Hospital
The Whittington Accident & Emergency Department will shortly be closed under a set of proposals currently being put forward by the NHS.
The proposal also involves shutting other specialist services such as intensive care, maternity and paediatrics and downgrading the Whittington to the status of a “local” hospital.
This would put at risk the lives of the 80,000 patients who visit the Whittington each year since they would have to travel further to other hospitals, such as the Royal Free and UCH, both of which are already extremely busy, difficult to reach by public transport and impossible to park near.
The Highgate Society calls for the NHS to conduct a professional cost benefit analysis which quantifies the transport costs for patients and staff (in terms of time and money) should the Whittington A&E Department be closed. Click here for our analysis of the increased travel time.
